How Often Should You Deep Clean Your House?
The Tri-Cities dust problem is real
If you live in Kennewick, Richland, Pasco, or West Richland, you already know the dust here is different. Wind rolls off the Horse Heaven Hills and picks up fine sediment from open ground and the Columbia Basin. A brown haze across the Pasco farmland during harvest season is not unusual. That grit finds its way through window seals, door frames, and HVAC vents, settling on every flat surface in your home whether you opened a window or not.
That is the main reason a standard weekly or bi-weekly cleaning routine, while useful, is not the whole picture. Surface dust gets wiped away. But over time, layers build up in the spots that routine visits do not reach, and that buildup is exactly what a deep clean is designed to tackle.
So how often is often enough?
For most households in the Tri-Cities, once or twice a year is the practical baseline. A good rule of thumb is to schedule one in spring, after the winter winds and heating season, and one in late summer or early fall, after harvest dust settles across the region and before you close the house up for winter.
That said, a few things push the number higher.
Pets
Pet hair and dander work their way into baseboards, ceiling fan blades, and the grille of your oven hood in ways that a regular clean does not fully address. If you have one or more dogs or cats, you will likely feel the difference between a two-times-a-year deep clean and a three-times-a-year schedule.
Kids and high traffic
Busy households with children, regular guests, or anyone tracking in from construction sites or farm roads simply accumulate grime faster. The grease ring around a stove builds up quicker. Soap scum in the bathrooms thickens. Fingerprints migrate to places you stopped noticing months ago.
New construction nearby
If you are in one of the newer neighborhoods, Southridge, Badger Mountain South, Horn Rapids, Road 68, or the expanding areas of West Richland, construction dust from nearby lots is a persistent issue. Builder dust is fine and travels far. Homes in these areas often need more frequent attention to baseboards and ceiling fans specifically.
Signs it is time right now
You do not always need a calendar reminder. Your home will tell you when a deep clean is overdue. Look for these:
- Grey baseboards. Run a finger along one. If it comes back with a visible stripe of dust, surface cleaning has not been reaching that area.
- Dusty ceiling fan blades. A thick ridge of dust on fan blades is one of the clearest signs. It also means that dust has been circulating through the room every time the fan runs.
- A greasy or dark oven interior. Baked-on grease and carbon buildup inside the oven is not touched in a standard clean. The inside of the oven is included in a deep clean, so if yours looks like it has been ignored for a while, that alone is a good reason to book one.
- Dingy grout or tile. Grout holds onto grime in ways that a quick wipe cannot resolve.
- A smell you cannot locate. Odors that linger despite regular cleaning often come from buildup in appliances, vents, or soft surfaces that have not been properly cleaned in a long time.
What a deep clean actually covers
A deep clean goes into the areas a standard clean skips. That includes baseboards, ceiling fans, inside the oven, and appliance exteriors throughout the home. It is a longer visit, more detailed work, and it is meant to reset the home to a clean baseline rather than just maintain it.
A move-in/move-out clean goes even further, adding the inside of the fridge, inside cabinets, and interior windows. That level of clean is built for lease turnovers, which are common here given how many PNNL and Hanford contractors cycle through rental properties in Kennewick and Richland.
How standard cleans keep things from building back up
The most practical approach is to use both. A deep clean resets the home. Regular standard cleans in between maintain it so the next deep clean does not have to work as hard. Homes that only get cleaned once a year tend to accumulate so much between visits that the clean takes significantly longer and costs more, simply because of condition.
Frequency, bedroom count, bathroom count, the type of clean, pets, and overall condition are the main things that determine what a visit costs. There is no single price that fits every home, which is why we quote flat by the specifics of yours.
